The artist Francesco De Grandi signs the drawing. Available also a series of limited edition philatelic products
Palermo, November 1st, 2020 - A limited edition stamp, to celebrate Palermo's 120th birthday. This is the special initiative that the rosanero club wanted to do, thanks to the collaboration of the Ministry of Economic Development, the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato, and the Italian Post Office, on November 1st, the day of the anniversary of the foundation.
The stamp, part of the themed series "lo Sport", englobes in a few centimeters the iconic elements of the rosanero history, elegantly presented in the design made specifically for the occasion by artist Francesco De Grandi, son of the unforgettable Palermo player and coach, Ninetto. The protagonists of the design, therefore, are Renzo Barbera stadium, the eagle, and the players: two dancing silhouettes which evoke the rupestrian engravings of the Palermitan grottos from Addaura, suggesting the ancient concept of competition, and the celebration of the beauty of the human body performing a fitness task.
"I started from the stadium, the "eagle's nest", an ellipse which holds together the parts of the drawing, gathering the city around its team. To draw the players, I travelled with my mind to the glories of Palermo, players who have shaped the history and collective immagination of yesterday's and today's team. Between the two players and the ball, an eagle soars, tall and fierce. A guiding spirit watching over the stadium and the city". "It has been a great honor for me to design the stamp for Palermo, which has been my team through all my life, and has marked the history of my family, giving joy, pain, success, and big emotions", said Francesco De Grandi.
Along with the stamp, a series of limited edition philatelic products were created, which are already destined to become true rarities for the fans and collection enthusiasts. All the products, which are limited edition, are placed in a special Folder, in A4 format, which contains a validated stamped postcard, a stamp, a philatelic card, a personalized envelope, stamped and validated, and 4 stamps. Also available is the prestigeous illustrative newspaper with the detailed description of the stamp, and a commemorative text, signed by the president of Palermo F.C., Dario Mirri. All these products can be bought, until they are out of stock, in post offices with philatelic counters, and philately spaces all over Italy (information on filatelia.poste.it), and also online on the same philately section from the Poste Italiana website.
In the morning of Sunday, November 1st, the philatelic counter from the Palermo Ausonia post office, located in Ausonia street, opens extraordinarily for the first day emission validation of the stamp. In this ocassion, it's possible to validate the stamp with the special "first day rubber stamp", which makes the stamp even more prestigeous.
Francesco De Grandi
Francesco De Grandi was born in Palermo in 1968. After his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts from his city, in 1994 he moves to Milan, where he will stay until 2008. From 2009 to 2012 he works in Shanghai, and then decides to come back to Palermo, where he finds a more suitable place for his research. From 1994 until today he participates in collective and personal exhibitions in public spaces, museums, and private galleries in Italy and aborad. Since 2017, he has been a painting teacher, and since 2020, an Artistic Anatomy teacher at the Palermo Academy of Fine Arts.
Narrative, figurative, evocative, romantic. The paintings of De Grandi reach a maturity immediately visible through the quality of colors, marks, and iconographic reinterpretation. A painting which comes to terms with tradition, while crossed by a contemporary vibration, with the subtle taste of blending, of tipping and ambiguous, an homage to the immense crowd which, from the mythological narrative to the raw current chronicle, inhabitates the world stage.
